My paintings reflect images derived from history to outline issues, which still resonate in our world today. The subject matter in my work correlates to the marriage of traditional techniques with a wide range of contemporary mediums. The delicate techniques of sewn fabric, cut paper, and gold leaf are juxtaposed with modern materials such as spray paint, enamel, and silkscreen. Through these processes I explore the political issues of racism, globalization, societal classifications, and isolation. Animals and insects in my work serve as referential figures to the fact that most of the natural world has been disturbed by human effects. Their habitats have been integrated with technology and urbanization. People have been deciphering the behavior of animals since the beginning of time. Using folklore as subject matter to demonstrate the creation or behavior of insects and animals exemplifies humanities justification and absurd reasoning. Ships in my work refer to the joining of cultures and unification of worlds. The results of globalization have also created social and racial classification and tensions. Process and application of materials play a significant role in determining the language in my paintings. The repetition of small hand sewn stitches is contrasted with flat painted and silk-screened images. The central figures in my work are outlined by embroidery. Using outlines and silhouettes the figures remain timeless. The boundaries of drawing are blurred by the use of thread. Transferring the form of an object or figure to canvas, and retracing the outline with small hand stitches creates new forms with the homogenization of line and color.
